Research Scientist / Engineer

United Pacific Projects Ltd. is a growing provider of inline inspection services to pipeline operators in Western Canada. Due to recent growth and UPP’s commitment to research and development, we are now accepting applications for the position of Research Scientist / Engineer. This ground floor role has great opportunity for advancement as the company’s technology group continues to grow.

The candidate must be a self-motivated person driven to provide quality products which are functional and maintainable, while adhering to standard sound engineering practice and UPP design and documentation standards. Must enjoy working as part of project teams as well as independently with minimal supervision. Must be passionate in their work, take pride in doing the job right, have a strong mechanical aptitude as required for prototyping and hands on testing.

Essential Functions

  • Works under direction to build and develop sizing algorithms for interpreting magnetic flux leakage data from inline inspection tools.
  • Develop means and methods to evaluate efficacy of any new algorithm or update.
  • Support all tool evaluation and verification activities.
  • Work within the technology team to develop specifications and project definitions.
  • Work with other teams to design effective system tests, including artificial defect creation.
  • Contribute to ongoing development projects within the technology team.
  • Identify opportunities for new advancement and novel solutions to pipeline issues.
  • Assist in the development of processes and procedures to drive operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to any Root Cause Analysis as required.
  • Work with other teams in support of R&D efforts.
  • Other operational and management related support as necessary.

Education

  • Physics, statistics, mathematics, or suitable engineering degree.
  • Project management experience is an asset.

Experience

  • Min 3-5 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical projects from inception to completion.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases an asset.
  • Previous experience with inline inspection tools and data an asset but not required.

Skillset

  • Detail oriented and passionate about doing the job completely, correctly, and in a quality manner.
  • Strong computer skills
    • Windows and Office proficiency required.
  • Strong social skills for communicating with co-workers, management, and clients both written and verbal.
    • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Experience with MATLAB.
  • Relational database experience (MySQL, SQLite, etc.).
  • Ability to balance personal technical work with required management output.
  • Personable and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Self-regulated, detail oriented, with a strong sense of pride in one’s work.
  • Ability to maintain poise, quality of work and efficiency during busy times.
  • Ability to evaluate and prioritize tasks considering business need.
  • Professional personal presentation and demeanor.
